Feature Match Runde 3: Jan Brinkmann vs Christian Lührs von Daniel "DanH" Hendricks |
30.05.2003 |
Game 1
Christian wins the dieroll und decides to play first. A 3rd turn Duress on Jans Side stripped a Edict from Lührs Hand leaving him with double Undead Gladiator, Engineered Plague and a swamp. Jan followed up with a Diabolic Tutor on Undead Gladiator on his next turn. Both players used their opponents endsteps to cycle the gladiator for new cards. Jan played a six turn Visara via two Cabal Coffers. But the Gorgon Legend fell to a Chainer's Edcit immediately.
The "buybacking" ability of the Gladiator proves extremly useful in this matchup, as both players uses the effect to get rid of their useless removal spells in this MBC on MBC matchup. Christian made the next move by stripping a haunting echoes from his opponents hand, following it up with Echoes of his own, removing the Duresses und Tutors from Brinkmanns Deck. Jan could only cycle through his deck with the help of the undead, while Lührs drew First Blood in this match: Corrupt for nine, aiming at Jans head. Jan returned the favour with his own Coruppt for 8 und adds a little Nantuko Shade to his side. But Lührs calmy flashbacked the Chainers Edict in his Graveyard to resolve the threat. Jan uses his opponents end step for a scrying, paying 6 life, to fill up his hand. He followed up with a Corrupt for 10 during his mainphase, changing the life score in his favor 22 - 11. Christian didn't hesitate to fetch his next own Corrupt via Tutor, swapping Life totals again: Christian 22 - 11. Businnes as usual on Jans next turn, you might have guessed it: Corrupt for 11, eventually returning the life totals in his favor. Christian Mind Sludged Jan on his next turn stripping his hand. All Jan needed to do was to topdeck his last Corrupt. With the help of Undead Gladiator he finds the finishing Card one turn later.

Game 2
Christian started with 1st turn Duress making Jan discard his Duress. He followed up with a Cabal Therapy on this second turn, naming Disrupting Scepter, a key sideboard card, he had
seen a turn before. Lührs finally settled on actually playing a Undead Gladiator instead of using his cycling ability. Lührs played a Gladiator of his own, but decided on saccing it to flashback the Cabal Therapy in his Grvaeyard, stripping a Mind Sludge. The next turn sees Lührs using Mind Sludge to transfer the last four cards from Brinkmanns Hand to the grave. But one problem stimm wasn't solved: the attacking gladiator on the ground. Brinkmann even ripped a Nantuko Shade from the top of his deck to increase the threats on the board. Lührs, facing lethal damage the next round, played Ensnaring Bridge on this turn with 0 cards in his hand. Without any possibility of removing the bridge, Brinkmann settles on plan B, winning by corrupting his opponent. Therefore he plays edict, targetting himself, so he could sacrifice the gladiator und uses its abilities to find a corrupt. But suprisingly Brinkmann didn't need his Plan B, when Lührs played Skeletal Scrying for 3, netting him three land. Unable to get rid of the cards in his hand, Nantuko Shade finished the job one turn later und carried Jan to victory
